The East Algarve sees a lot fewer tourists than other parts of this region, meaning that visitors will be rewarded with a more peaceful and authentic experience!
Tavira, our base for this walking holiday, is a scenic town located on both sides of the meandering Gilão River.
From here, you’ll walk to villages and landscapes in the Caldeirão Mountains, following trails crossing the Algarve way, and coastal gems, along the amazing Ria Formosa Natural Park.
Tavira is an ancient Moorish town that has retained its unique character and heritage. A place full of charm, with cobblestones, beautiful tree-lined streets, and traditional Portuguese architecture.
There are plenty of historic buildings, including a castle, multiple Gothic and Renaissance churches, an old Roman bridge crossing the Gilão.
The river flows into the Ria Formosa National Park, a haven for natural life with absolutely stunning vistas. Across the canal, the sandy, unspoiled beaches of Tavira’s island, one of the most beautiful in the world.
Another walks along the coast will lead us to quaint coastal villages such as Santa Luzia, Cabanas, and Cacela Velha.
Inland, we wind our way between hills and valleys to the low peak of Zimbral, with wide rewarding views, and Cachopo, high in the Caldeirão Mountains.
Ancient trails will take us past farms, through an intricate patchwork of orange groves, olive and carob orchards.
Sometimes we walk beside rivers; other times amongst the pines and cork oaks.
Through most of our season, we are presented with an endless and ever-changing procession of beautiful flowers.

Classic coastal walk following the inner shoreline and visiting the iconic village of Cacela Velha before arriving in Cabanas for a well-earned rest in one of the many cafés lining this spectacular waterfront. From here we will return to Tavira.
An inland walk through one of most beautiful and interesting valleys in the Algarve.
Santa Catarina is one of the centres for the production of carob, almond, fig, olive oil and medronho and the surrounding countryside we walk through reflects this. We will also pass tiny brick and tile works whose hand-made craft dates back to before Roman times.
A lovely walk following the Algarve’s Ecovia. We pass by old estates with orange, figs and almond orchards and through the salt pans of Fuzeta where we are able to appreciate the rich birdlife of the area.
At convenient time transfer to the Airport.
